How to Attract Exceptional Talent for Your Startup

Real Talk from a multiple Founder

Launching a startup is like jumping off a cliff and assembling a plane on the way down—thrilling, a bit terrifying, and absolutely dependent on your crew. After founding four startups, including Rippletide, I've learned a thing or two about what truly attracts exceptional talent. Spoiler alert: it’s not just money.

Let’s dive straight in—here’s my unfiltered take on what works (and what doesn’t) when attracting your first team members.

Mission First

Let's get brutally honest. If someone’s main motivation is a high salary, they're probably not the right fit for your startup's early days. Exceptional startup talent isn’t chasing paychecks—they’re chasing a purpose.

Your mission must be crystal clear and deeply inspiring. People want their work to matter, and your startup can offer exactly that. Show candidates how their role directly contributes to something meaningful, something bigger than themselves. That’s what gets real talent out of bed in the morning.

For example, at Rippletide we’re not just building one more sales tool, our vision is crystal clear to define the future of agents, specialized on sales. I can promise that excitement is infectious.

Embrace the Chaos (and Love It)

Early startup life is messy. Your first idea might fail spectacularly, your second might need major tweaks, and your third might finally hit the jackpot. The best startup talent doesn’t just tolerate uncertainty—they thrive on it.

During recruitment, I’m brutally transparent. "We're figuring things out as we go," I say. Those who lean forward with excitement at this statement are your people. Those who hesitate or flinch—probably not.

Look for people who smile at the thought of iterating quickly, pivoting on a dime, and turning uncertainty into opportunity.

Collaboration Over Ego

At Rippletide, we’ve found that ego is the quickest startup killer. You need people who are comfortable being wrong, love to collaborate, and eagerly share credit. Great teams win together, lose together, and learn together.

When hiring, ask candidates about their biggest failures and watch carefully. Do they shift blame, or do they own the experience and highlight what they learned? Real team players see failures as collective learning experiences.

Offer the Entrepreneurship Experience (Minus the Sleepless Nights)

Loads of people dream of entrepreneurship but aren’t ready to take on all the risks. Your startup is their golden ticket—a chance to experience entrepreneurship firsthand without the full burden of founding their own business.

Highlight this clearly in your conversations. Working at your startup should feel like entrepreneurship training on steroids—rapid learning, major responsibilities, and involvement in strategic decisions from day one.

Stock Options: Your Secret Weapon

When Google and Amazon offer huge salaries, how can your startup compete? Two words: stock options.

Stock options transform your early employees into genuine stakeholders. They're not just working for you—they're working alongside you, sharing in your future success. When discussing compensation, emphasize equity. Look for candidates whose eyes light up at the possibility of owning a part of the company they help build.

Sell the Vision—Authentically and Passionately

Your ability to inspire and excite candidates about your vision is possibly your greatest asset as a founder. Be genuine, passionate, and a little vulnerable. People connect deeply with authenticity.

Share your personal story. Why did you start this journey? What motivates you to keep pushing forward every day? At Rippletide, our enthusiasm about reshaping customer engagement is contagious—not because it's a polished pitch, but because it’s real.

Build a Culture of Fun and Hard Work

Culture matters—a lot. Top talent will sacrifice a bit on salary if it means joining a workplace where they love spending their days. Create an environment where intense work blends seamlessly with fun, respect, and genuine camaraderie.

At Rippletide our culture bonds us, makes tough days manageable, and great days unforgettable.

Recruit the Right People Early

Attracting exceptional talent isn't easy, but it’s absolutely worth the effort. Your first hires set the tone for everything that follows. Choose carefully, communicate honestly, and build something that excites talented individuals about the future.

You're not just hiring employees—you're assembling your dream team, ready to build the future alongside you. Good luck out there!
